Originally known as Trough Shoals, this area was acquired by Montgomery and Walker, Fleming, and Company in 1881 to establish a textile mill along the Pacolet River. In 1884, John H. Montgomery's vision came to life as the Pacolet Manufacturing Company became operational. The success of the mill led to the growth of the town, with investment pouring in from Seth Milliken, a New York merchant associated with the Deering Milliken Company. The mill owners built a thriving community around the mill, providing housing, stores, and the necessary infrastructure.

As time unfolded, Milliken & Co took over the mill's ownership, and it operated until 1983 when it permanently closed its doors. Pacolet, however, retains the components for community investment, boasting a vibrant river, a beautifully designed mill town by landscape architect Earl Draper, and remnants of an extensive former mill development. Pacolet hosts a variety of events celebrating its cultural heritage, including the Greater Pacolet Indian Summer Festival each fall.
