Project Host BBQ Greenville SC

As I drove through main street after work yesterday, I couldn't help but notice the large number of people, the smell of barbecue, and the smoke shooting out all the grills lined up in an area besides Soby's on main street in Downtown Greenville. I just couldn't resist the temptation, so I found a place to park and walked back to check it out for my self.

Project Host BBQSo here is what I found out--the event is called Project Host BBQ cook-off festival, an annual event to raise money for Project Host Soup Kitchen, which provides daily meals to the needy in the Greenville, SC area and the CC Pearce Culinary School, which trains unemployed people in food service. Friday was wing day, so I paid the $10 fee to get in, bought a bottle of water and went on to sample the chicken wings prepared by several different local chefs. I was determined to sample every vendor's wings so I can be able to vote for my favorite at the end. So, off I went from one tent to another, some spicy, some juice, some dry, some were just a little cold for my liking, sampling while the music from the live entertainment played in the background.

After getting a taste of every vendors wings, I went back to the two that were on top of my list to see which wings I like the most. After tasting both again, I ended up voting for Nard's Backyard BBQ. In my opinion, their wings had right balance, right amount of flavor, spice, and they kept them warm. I don't know if they will win the competition, but they definitely won in my book, or should I say taste buds.

So, if you love BBQ and are in Greenville SC today, be sure to check out the ribs day cook-off today until 10pm. If you get too full, you can always take a carriage ride around a few times. If you missed it this year, be sure to check out next year's event.
