Cherokee County is one of the major producers of peaches in all of the U.S. As of the 2018 census, the population was 57,078. The county seat is Gaffney. Cherokee County was formed in 1897 from parts of York, Union and Spartanburg Counties. It was named for the Cherokee people who historically occupied this area prior to European encounter.
Cherokee County was occupied for thousands of years by indigenous peoples and by the historic Cherokee people before European encounter. Did you know the Battle of Cowpens was fought on January 17th, 1781, in northwestern Cherokee County, north of the town of Cowpens. Cherokee County has a beautiful view of the mountains. These mountains can include the Draytonville Mountains, Brown's Mountains, Thicketty Mountains and Whitalker Mountains. Cherokee County is also the only county to have 3 national parks within its boundaries: the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, Kings Mountain National Military Park, and Cowpens National Battlefield.
Cherokee County offers a variety of shopping, including the Premium Outlets which have over 75 outlet stores. These outlets also attract over 3,000,000 visitors per year. The Gaffney Little Theatre and Limestone College serve theatre enthusiasts, offering plays and musicals ten to twelve times a year.
