Settled down along the scenic shores of Lake Russell near the South Carolina-Georgia border, Calhoun Falls boasts a rich history and a tranquil small-town atmosphere. The town's story began in the 1890s when the Western Carolina Land and Improvement Company envisioned a thriving community in the southwestern corner of Abbeville District. Acquiring 697 acres, the company meticulously planned the town, laid out streets, and erected a 22-room hotel, later named Cox Avenue after Judge W. F. Cox. Calhoun Falls itself bears the name of Colonel James Edward Calhoun, owner of the historic Millwood estate on the Savannah River and a relative of the renowned John C. Calhoun. Notably, a portion of Colonel Calhoun's land now rests beneath the waters of Lake Russell. The early 1900s marked a period of growth, culminating in August 1906 when the Calhoun Falls Investment Company acquired significant town property. The subsequent announcement of the Calhoun Mills Company building a cotton mill in September 1906 spurred further development. In 1908, as the mill took shape, the town earned its incorporation charter, and the Bank of Calhoun Falls opened its doors, leaving a lasting legacy in a brick building atop Cox Avenue.
