Purge Before you Pack

The process of packing up is a great time to start purging and downsizing. You’ll save time and money, and maybe you can even make a little extra cash by selling items that you don’t want to move. 

Will it Fit?

If you have any especially large furniture, or if your doorways are narrow, it would be a good idea to make sure your furniture will fit through the door. If not, disassemble ahead of time or at least let your movers know before the big day so that they can be prepared with the proper tools.



Pack Your Belongings Properly

If you’re packing up your own things, make sure to use sturdy boxes of the right size, dividers and foam or other padding for fragile things. Some items require special boxes, such as artwork or electronics. Packing things securely will lessen the chances of anything being broken during the move. 

If you’re letting the movers do the packing for you, make sure that all of your things are in their proper place in your home. Where to Park

Your movers will greatly appreciate your forethought in telling them where to park on moving day. Make sure they have plenty of room to maneuver and park the moving truck. If your own driveway isn’t large enough or if you don’t have a private driveway, you may need to secure a parking pass or get permission from a neighbor to park in a shared driveway.



Protect Your Home

We all hope for good weather on moving day, but most of us have had to move in the pouring rain or snow at least once in our lives. Preparing for less than ideal weather by putting a tarp or protective floor covering down in doorways and major traffic areas can help to keep your carpet clean as movers come in and out. Always protect hardwood floors with a moving blanket to avoid damage as heavy items are moved. If the weather is icy, be sure to put down salt on your porch, steps, or sidewalk to minimize the chances of your movers falling and getting injured during the move. 

Plan for Children and Pets on Moving Day 

Having children underfoot while moving boxes and heavy furniture is a recipe for disaster. For everyone’s sanity and safety, it might be best to hire a babysitter on moving day. 

With the door being wide open and people coming and going from the house, there’s a serious likelihood that your pet will escape. Keep pets in crates or confined to a room with a gate or the door closed, or hire a pet sitter for the day.
