Originally named Twiggs, the town underwent a transformation in 1884 when the completion of the Savannah Valley Railroad prompted a change to Starr Station, honoring a beloved train engineer, Captain W.W. Starr. Chartered officially in 1888, the town embraced the name Starr in tribute to , a prominent figure in the railroad.
