While the official first day of summer (June 20th) isn't for a couple weeks, it already feels like summer in Greenville, SC! The smell of fresh cut grass is in the air, and everyone is breaking out the flip flops, sunglasses, and iced tea. What better way to celebrate the beginning of summer than checking out our local farmers market? Displaying all the phenomenal bounty the Upstate has to offer (all food must be grown or produced within 100 miles of Greenville), the TD Saturday Market is truly an enjoyable experience.
I made my way Downtown this past Saturday to experience my first TD Saturday Market, and WOW! I've been to my fair share of farmers markets through the years, and the Saturday Market has earned a spot as a top contender. The Downtown Greenville atmosphere never fails to delight, and the market has found the perfect set up starting at the corner of Main Street and McBee Avenue. From farmers market staples like local fruits and veggies, to artisan cheeses, meats, pastas and more, this market has something for everyone!
Don't worry, the party doesn't end once your cooler (which I highly recommend you bring) is full; the market also features soaps, jewelry, pottery, and other handcrafted goodies. Show up early (the market starts at 8:00 am) and grab some breakfast and coffee while you browse. There are plenty of heavenly smelling baked goods to choose from, and some local restaurants (including Soby's on the Side) have booths if you'd prefer something a little more hearty.
Don't forget to bring your little ones! There are events and programs set up especially for kids (last Saturday was Touch-a-Truck Day, where children of all ages could explore inside different types of vehicles, from fire engines to tractors). Live musicians dotted throughout the market offer added entertainment.
Spuds & Sprouts presented by Greenville Health System hosts one kids activity each week. The Seed Tasting is this Saturday (June 11th), where children can learn all about seeds and their importance in nature. Kids will be able to try different seeds and pick their favorite. Be sure to also check out the Youth Booth, where young entrepreneurs showcase their skills and market their merchandise.
