COVID-19 has been a struggle for everyone- but positive support from friends, family, and peers can do wonders. While it's crucial to remain social distancing, there are still many ways you can stay connected.

Keep to a routine.

 

Try to avoid staying in bed for hours and hours on end. Make it a habit to get up at a set time and get ready for the day. Make breakfast, stretch, and enjoy the morning. If you have work, try mentally preparing for the day, or even making a list. 

You could also start making lunch a daily routine, like putting more time and effort into your meals. This is perfect because it also breaks up the day, easing the stress a little.

Enjoy time with the family.

Things like projects, or even movies are great activities to do together. It can also make things feel a little less scary.

Do some online courses.

You may already be taking classes for school, but taking classes on specific things that interest you is a great way to switch things up. Right now you have access to things like dance classes, art lessons, and even music lessons- most free! Learning a new skill can be a really neat experience.

Check-in on your friends, family, and neighbors.

Try to keep your connections as normal and supportive as you can. Asking about their activities and what their days are like is a great way to share positive things. You can talk about what's keeping you happy and busy, and even listen to their own ideas. You might even be inspired to try something new!

Being supportive can also be as little as letting your loved ones know you're there, and you're around. Letting them know you're just a text or a call away will make hem feel more comfortable reaching out at any time.

It can also be good just to listen. This works very well with those who are completely isolated.

Make a lunch date.

Coordinate a date and time to virtually eat lunch with pals about once or twice a week. Some even do virtual coffee sessions!

Support local businesses.

Many local businesses are taking a big financial hit. Social media is a powerful tool- making local recommendations to family and friends can do wonders. Maybe you had a delicious meal delivered, or your favorite small business is selling gift cards for future use. This will not only give others something to look forward to, but it'll help many local businesses get back on their feet.

Make future plans.

You can keep you and your pals spirits up by planning trips for the future! Making travel plans or even just local outings can help you stay motivated. Dream about the restaurants, landmarks, and sight you'd like to see. They'll be waiting for you after things die down!

Exercise. 

Meditation and physical activity can relieve tress and get your endorphins flowing. Things like exercise videos work great! Some may be free and some paid, but no matter your body or age- anyone can workout in the privacy and comfort of their home. 

You can also do things like set up a home gym, curate your own personal exercise program, and learn some basics. Smartphone apps are helpful as well! You can enjoy guided workouts, and fitness apps to keep track of your progress. 

Celebrate milestones.

On things like holidays or birthdays, connecting via Zoom is most popular. This can bring together friends and family from all over the world.

Go outside.

Things like hiking and walking are good as long as you keep a 6-foot distance from those around you. You can research trails and parks still open, and following government recommendations.

Take your dog for a walk. Going out for fresh air isn't just good for you, but good for them too. It's also a good opportunity to walk around the neighborhood and say hello to your neighbors. (From 6-feet away of course.)

You can help older ones stay connected as well. 

Even if you can't visit in person, make sure you're keeping in contact on a regular basis. You can use things like Skype, FaceTime, or even email. This way they can see you, and you can see how well they're doing. If they're not too comfortable with technology, even a simple phone call would go a long way. 

You can also write letters! As old-fashioned as it seems, you can include things like photographs. (Don't forget to remind them to wash their hands after opening all letters and packages.)
